Antique, Heritage or Old Garden Roses (OGR’s) are a favorite of gardeners for their historical significance and beauty.  David Austin’s English Roses combine the look and fragrance of OGR’s with the flowering of modern roses.  Both are very well suited for gardens in the Mother Lode, as they complement the historic rustic charm of the area.  It’s like growing a bit of beautiful history in your garden.

The Mother Lode Rose Society proudly presents “Antiques and Austin Roses” at 1:30 PM on April 7.  Our featured speaker, Judy Eitzen, is a Master Gardener and expert in Old Garden Roses and their modern counterpart, the Austins.  As an avid Historic Rose Garden volunteer at the Sacramento Old City Cemetery, she is a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm: conducting tours, editing the newsletter, managing  website and maintaining a photographic inventory of the roses in the historic Rose Garden.  She will be sharing her love of Antique roses and Austin roses, and advising which varieties to choose for best fragrance, growth habit and beauty.

Judy is a retired library manager who was with the Sacramento Public Library for more than 30 years.  In retirement, she became a Master Gardener and volunteer at the Historic Rose Garden.  She was drawn to old garden roses because of their historic value.  Her family has been in California since the mid 19th century.  She’s conducted and participated in many historic tours including in costume and lantern tours of the Rose Garden.
