Tue., Mar. 1 at 1:30 PM “Old Garden Roses Part 1 – Sacramento Historic Cemetery Rose Garden” by Anita Clevenger
Our March meeting kicks off a two part series on Old Garden Roses. The March 1 meeting features Anita Clevenger, Old Garden Roses Part 1: Sacramento Historic Cemetery, and the April 5 meeting MLRS member Hilde Langlet Old Garden Roses Part 2 – Heritage Roses in the Mother Lode.
The Sacramento Historic City Cemetery Historic Rose Garden was founded in 1992 as a place to preserve old roses that have been collected from other historic cemeteries and sites throughout the Mother Lode and beyond. Anita Clevenger is the Curator of this award winning collection, and will be sharing the background and beauty of these antique roses.
Anita will be sharing with us how roses came to California during pioneer days, how they survived for decades with very little water or care, and how rose experts sought them out and collected them. Some of the old roses they found have been identified as roses that were once thought to be lost. The name of others may never be known. However, they represent California’s history and horticultural heritage.
The Sacramento Historic Cemetery Historic Rose Garden serves as a place where these pioneer heritage roses may be studied, and where the public can learn more about heirloom roses through various educational opportunities. The Historic Rose Garden has been recognized with numerous distinguished awards, including induction into the Garden Hall of Fame by Great Rosarians of the World, and the international award Garden of Excellence by the World Federation of Rose Societies.
Anita Clevenger is a Lifetime University of California Master Gardener, and garden columnist for Sacramento’s “Inside Publications.” She is on the board of the Old City Cemetery Committee and the Heritage Rose Foundation. Anita’s articles about roses have been published in the “American Rose” magazine, the World Federation of Rose Societies’ newsletter, and in Heritage Rose Foundation’s publication “Rosa Mundi.”
Join us on Tuesday March 1 at 1:30 PM for Part 1 of our two-part series on Old Garden Roses, featuring Anita Clevenger and the Sacramento Historic Cemetery Rose Garden, which will cover the history of pioneer roses and this award winning collection. Part 2 will conclude in April with Mother Lode Rose Society member Hilde Langlet discussing her experiences growing these historic roses in the Mother Lode.
This program is free and open to the public. The Mother Lode Rose Society meets at the Amador Senior Center, 229 New York Ranch Road, Jackson CA.
